The British Florist Association is the only trade association in the florist industry that is recognised by Government both in the UK and EU. As the exclusive UK member of FLORINT, the European Federation of Florist Associations, the BFA is recognised as the voice of the industry representing 6,500 UK florists.
Although recognised by the Government, the BFA is not government funded, and we rely on our membership subscriptions for funding.
The BFA has been established for over fifty years, originally called the British Retail Florist Association, and incorporated by a handful of florists who needed to lobby government about plans to tax funeral flowers. At the time there was no appropriate trade body and the BRFA was born! We've got a slightly shorter name now, but lobbying government on behalf of the industry is still an important part of our service to the industry. Recent issues have included bans on flower deliveries to hospitals, increases in business rates and proposed EU legislation.
Whilst commercial matters are top of the list in terms of activity, training is an essential ingredient of the BFA service offer. In 2009 we launched management workshops - "Managing through the downturn in the UK floristry industry". These workshops, worth £500 per delegate, were fully funded by Train 2 Gain and provided free to our members. Since then, these workshops have developed and evolved into today's BFA Skills Academy.
Free of charge to all florists, these regional events are an opportunity for florists to chat and network with others in their area. Evening and weekend events are held each year in all parts of the UK from Cornwall to Glasgow and for our Northern Ireland members we hold one in Belfast too! BFA Local events include both a business and design element with guest demonstrators. BFA Local events also host heats for various floristry competitions.
Our annual trade show - BFA Fleurex - is a chance for florists to mix, mingle and share ideas that can help both their businesses and their customers. We have a wide range of exhibitors, demonstrators and other events and it's an annual date in October that every florist should have in their diary.
Each year the BFA organises a number of floristry competitions to capture and develop the talent that is found in the UK Florist Industry. As the official competition partner the BFA is very proud to find the finalists for the Worldskills UK Floristry competition as well as the prestigious RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year competition. As the UK member to Florint the BFA also finds the contestants for the Europa Cup and Eurofleurs Competition for the under 25s
